The successful applicant will be expected to actively contribute to cyber security research projects and have the ability to learn new technologies quickly and independently.
These positions will be filled at either the Systems Programmer 2 or Systems Programmer 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Systems Programmer 2 ($69,500 - $113,300)
· Must be able to work as part of a diverse team in a collaborative and multidisciplinary scientific environment and have excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
· Working knowledge of one or more of the following areas: cyber operations, intrusion detection, cyber analysis, reverse engineering or analyzing malware, network data analysis, computer forensics, cyber penetration testing, and anomaly detection.
· Experience programming with Python, C, C++ and/or Go programming languages in combination with a demonstrated foundation of computer science algorithms, data structures, big-O notation, and network programming (e.g. sockets, clients, servers).
· Experience configuring, managing, and securing Linux systems.
· Experience in large systems programming projects including parsing and analyzing data at scale, building tool libraries, and automation.
· Working knowledge of the use of UNIX command line tools (sed, grep, awk, etc.) and the ability to write shell scripts.
· Bachelor's degree and minimum of four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Systems Programmer 3 ($84,300 - $139,000)
· Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: cyber operations, intrusion detection, cyber analysis, reverse engineering or instrumenting malware, network data analysis, computer forensics, cyber penetration testing, and anomaly detection.
· Advanced programming skills with Python, C, C++. and/or Go programming languages in combination with a demonstrated foundation of computer science algorithms, data structures, big-O notation, and network programming (e.g. sockets, clients, servers).
· Expert use of UNIX command line tools (sed, grep, awk, etc.).
· Solid understanding of network configuration and design.
· Solid understanding of network protocols.
· Experience collecting and analyzing data at scale.

Desired Experience:
· Experience coding/hacking in a rapidly evolving research environment rather than software engineering to fixed specification.
· Knowledge of common cyber vulnerabilities and exploit vectors.
· Experience with SQL and configuring/using databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, sqlite, NoSQL).
· Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., qemu, VMWare, VirtualBox).
· Multithreaded and/or cluster computing experience (e.g., SMP, MapReduce).
· Experience designing and developing APIs.
· Advanced degree highly desirable
Located in Northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has a key role in many Global Security programs, is primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, and conducts ground-breaking R&D across a wide range of scientific disciplines. The Advanced Research in Cyber Systems Office (ARCS) at LANL is a nationally recognized capability in information security and networking science that predicts and solves critical problems in the cyber domain using novel yet practical solutions. ARCS is an interdisciplinary team of computer scientists, mathematicians, and engineers from across the Laboratory who are developing the technical underpinnings necessary to address national security issues in cyberspace using the Laboratory’s leadership position in complex networks, network science, statistics, modeling, risk analysis, high-performance computing, smartgrid control theory, and quantum communications
